To run Camtasia Relay server software, you'll need a server with these minimums…

Camtasia Relay requires Windows Server 2003 (32-bit, SP2 or later) or Windows Server 2008 (32-bit or 64-bit, SP1 or later) (Dedicated server running Windows Server 2008 64-bit (SP1) recommended).

1 Simultaneous Encoding [?]

More simultaneous encodings means faster production and publishing of recorded content, but also requires more powerful server hardware. For an explanation of simultaneous encoding and help with choosing the right capacity for your needs, see the pricing page

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Camtasia Relay Server compatible with the 64-bit version of Windows Server?

A: Yes. Camtasia Relay 1.2 has a 64-bit version that operates with Windows Server 2008 64-bit only.

Q: Can I run Camtasia Relay in a Virtual Machine configuration?

A: Camtasia Relay may be run in a virtualized environment with the understanding that the CPU-intensive nature of transcodings makes it a good fit for a dedicated server. If given the necessary resources in a properly configured VM instance, it will work well. Running the Camtasia Relay server on an underpowered or multi-purpose VM is not recommended and will result in poor performance.

Q: Can I run other applications on the same server with Camtasia Relay?

A: Camtasia Relay is designed to run on a stand-alone server and not as an application on a multi-purpose server. Other SQL Server installations or instances, additional websites, or other non-standard software or web applications installed on the server may cause problems with the recorder (client) communication with the Relay server.

Q: What should I do to prepare my server for installation?

A: It is recommended that you begin with a fresh install of Windows Server 2003/2008, install all related Windows patches, and then install Camtasia Relay Server. The software installer will walk you through the setup process.

Q: Do I really need 100+ GB of hard drive space on the server?

A: Yes. You need a lot of hard disk space because unprocessed recordings consume space until they are published (at which time the original recording is deleted). As a rough guideline, a 1-hour recording requires between 1-2 GB of space.

Q: What's the benefit of more CPU cores?

A: More processing cores means more simultaneous encoding potential, and therefore, faster encoding and publishing. More details...

Q: Why doesn't Camtasia Relay use all available CPU cores for encoding?

A: Camtasia Relay reserves one core for overhead processes which yields faster encodings and publishing overall. For example, if you use a quad-core server, Camtasia Relay will encode 3 simultaneous recordings. This achieves the fastest performance, and is faster than if all 4 cores were dedicated to encoding recordings.
