Create Quick “How-To” Guides for Students and Staff

What has been your typical experience when giving students multi-step directions? A little work with Snagit can yield huge time savings in the long run. We’ll show you how specific features in Snagit can help make instructions and processes much more clear. Students will have to get even more creative trying to explain why they’re not doing what you asked of them.

In this example, we assume you have Microsoft Word and we’ll whip up a document that will help students name a file according to the teacher’s specifications, save the file appropriately and put it in the correct network folder.

First, Launch Snagit. Under the Profiles section, select Region capture.

Tip: Snagit has tons of capture features that can make your document look much fancier. To automatically apply an effect to all your captures —like convert color to black and white or add borders or “torn edge” like in the example below, check out this tutorial on the Snagit Learning Center.

Next, make a series of captures and inserts them into the Word document using Snagit’s handy Word Output Accessory.

  1. The first thing the students need to know is how to name their file when they save it. Open the Save dialog in the program they will use and start to save a file. Capture the desired region with Snagit. Prnt Scrn is the default hotkey. The image opens automatically in the Snagit Editor.
  2. In the Editor, use the Callout tool Callout icon to highlight specific directions. Your image might look something like this:
  3. Example file name
  4. When finished, in the Send tab, click the Word icon in the Output Accessories group. This accessory is installed by default when Snagit is installed. If you do not see it, or you are interested in over a dozen accessories TechSmith offers, visit: http://www.techsmith.com/snagit/accessories.asp.
  5. Note: The image will be inserted at the point of your cursor in Word. If Word is not open, Snagit opens Word and insert the image at the top of a new document.
  6. Word output
  7. Repeat the process to show the path where your students should save the file.
  8. To draw some extra attention to the path, try a spotlight and magnify effect. In the Draw tab, click the Selection tool. Draw the selection around the file path. In the Image tab click the Spotlight & Magnify button. Adjust settings as desired. Your image might look something like this:

    Blur spotlight effect applied

  9. In the Send tab, click the Word icon in the Output Accessories group.
  10. Complete and print the document.

Tip: If you really wanted to show the literal step-by-step process, you can capture a bunch of images in rapid succession and then address them all at once later in Editor. If you don’t want the Editor to keep popping up after each captured image, turn off this option in Snagit Tools > Program Preferences > Program Options (tab) > uncheck Foreground the Editor.
