Camtasia Studio 4 Tutorial: Video Editing Basics in Camtasia Studio

Cutting and Splitting allows you to trim out the pieces of the audio and/or video that you don’t want on your Timeline. Camtasia Studio contains a variety of editing tools that allow you to enhance the look and feel of your screen recordings. This tutorial will focus on the basic editing features of cutting and splitting and will help you get to know the Timeline a little better.

Making a Cut on the Timeline

Use the Cut option to remove unwanted portions of your video.

  1. Click and drag the seek bar on the Timeline to highlight the portion of your video that you want to remove. Once highlighted, the Cut icon will become active on the Timeline toolbar.
  2. Click the Cut icon and the highlighted section will be removed.

Note: If you make a mistake when cutting your video, use the Undo Arrow Camtasia Studio Undo Arrow to bring your cut area back to your Timeline.

For those of you who like shortcuts, simply right-clicking on the area you selected in the Timeline will give you the option to Cut Selection.

The menu option Edit > Cut Selection is also available; and the default hotkey is Ctrl + X on your keyboard.

Splitting Your Video into Multiple Clips

Splitting your video clips allows you to insert other types of media between the two clips. You can also use Splitting as a way to delete parts of your video from the Timeline.

  1. Place the seek bar in the location on your timeline where you would like to split your video.
  2. Click the Split Icon on the timeline toolbar to split your video in that exact location.

  1. Your video on the timeline should now have two separate clips.

  1. This will allow you to insert other media between them; including title clips, transitions, still images, etc.

  1. Splitting your video clip can also be used to remove unwanted portions from the Timeline. Click the Split Icon to the left and right of the portion you would like removed. Then right-click on the individual clip you just created and choose Remove From Timeline from the menu.

A Quick Tip: Using Zoom to Expand the Timeline

If you need to make a cut or split in an area on your Timeline that is difficult to see, try the Zoom-in Icon on the Timeline toolbar to help locate that specific area.
