Camtasia Relay Tutorial:
Camtasia Studio Integration

Note: This tutorial assumes you are already familiar with Camtasia Studio and Camtasia Relay. To learn about Camtasia Studio or Camtasia Relay, please refer to the in-product help or the Learning Center.
Camtasia Relay and Camtasia Studio offer unique capabilities that complement certain workflows.
Already a Camtasia Studio user? You can take advantage of the Camtasia Recorder’s features, like SmartFocus, edit with Camtasia Studio then produce with Camtasia Relay to produce multiple video formats to multiple locations.
Need the full editing power of Camtasia Studio, but still offer users (presenters) the recording simplicity of Camtasia Relay? People can record with Camtasia Relay and have a profile that sends the video to a Camtasia Studio user for editing and quality control.
Key concepts:
- The Camtasia Relay recorder must be installed on the computer with Camtasia Studio in order for the Camtasia Relay production preset to appear in the Camtasia Studio Production Wizard.
- Camtasia Relay profiles take precedence over Camtasia Studio Presets.
- The .camproj file from Camtasia Studio is rendered to AVI before it uploads to Camtasia Relay for processing.
Terms to know:
Camtasia Recorder: This is the screen recorder associated with Camtasia Studio.
Camtasia Relay Recorder: The screen recorder associated with Camtasia Relay.
Presenter: The user recording the computer screen with either Camtasia Recorder or Camtasia Relay Recorder.
Profile: A Camtasia Relay profile consists of record settings, and one or more encode and publish settings. Profiles do not contain personal information.
Production Preset: A Camtasia Studio production preset contains production settings optimized for your intended distribution method: e.g. Web, CD, iPhone, etc.
Camrec: This is a file type supported by Camtasia Studio. Camtasia Relay profiles should include a .camrec output if the file will be used in Camtasia Studio.
Encoding: The process of converting a recording in to another format. For example, Camtasia Relay or Camtasia Studio may encode the original file into a format viewable on an iPod, in Windows Media Player, or on the Web.
Workflow One: Automatically Produce Multiple Formats and Destinations
Record: Camtasia Recorder
Edit: Camtasia Studio
Produce: Camtasia Relay
Example Uses:
- You are familiar with Camtasia Studio and appreciate its recording and editing features. You would like to use Camtasia Relay to efficiently publish a variety of video formats, perhaps even publish to multiple locations.
- You are familiar with Camtasia Studio and your workplace requires all videos to be published to locations under the control of a network administrator (via your Camtasia Relay Profile).
Advantages
- Ability to use ScreenDraw and other Camtasia recording effects.
- Ability to use SmartFocus (not available in Camtasia Relay recordings).
- Camrec file saved locally and ready for immediate editing in Camtasia Studio.
- Camtasia Relay production can save time if you want multiple video formats and automated publishing to multiple destinations.
Limitations/Considerations
- In Camtasia Studio, choose dimensions that match your largest Camtasia Relay Profile. If you are uncertain, select Recording Dimensions as the preset (in Project Settings). Later, Camtasia Relay will use your Profile to determine final dimensions and formats.
- Cannot use Flash hotspots, quizzes, survey, closed captions, end actions (lose when converted to AVI).
- Will take time to create AVI in Camtasia Studio to send to Camtasia Relay, then Camtasia Relay encodes for final destinations.

- Profile with final encoding and publishing destinations.

Workflow Two: Full Editing Capability with Ease of Camtasia Relay Recording
Record: Camtasia Relay Recorder
Edit: Camtasia Studio
Produce: Camtasia Studio
Example Uses:
- Multiple Presenters record and one or more experienced Camtasia Studio users do the editing. The Presenter records, submits the presentation and walks away. This can be great for conferences or quality control.
- This workflow can come in handy if you’re presenting using a computer that doesn’t have Camtasia Studio (e.g. a Mac or guest computer) but would like to edit and produce with Camtasia Studio.
Advantages
- Presenters use simple Camtasia Relay recorder and others can edit with Camtasia Studio.
- Full editing capabilities of Camtasia Studio.
Limitations/Considerations
- Cannot use SmartFocus, ScreenDraw, or other Camtasia Recorder features (not available in Camtasia Relay recordings).
- Each video format must be produced individually.
Profiles Needed
- One Profile that generates a .camrec file and publishes to a location where the person doing the editing can retrieve it.

Example Uses:
- You recorded with Camtasia Relay and unexpectedly need to edit your presentation. You have access to Camtasia Studio, and produce with Camtasia Relay.
- A designated editor receives the initial .camrec and publishes back to Camtasia Relay because they have numerous formats and publish destinations.
Advantages
- Presenters use the simple Camtasia Relay recorder. Video can undergo basic editing and be efficiently produced in numerous formats and locations.
Limitations/Considerations
- In Camtasia Studio, choose dimensions that match your largest Camtasia Relay Profile. If you are uncertain, select Recording Dimensions as the preset (in Project Settings). Later, Camtasia Relay will use your Profile to determine final dimensions and formats.
