Capturing Still Images from a DVD Player using SnagIt

ID: 7015
Product:SnagIt
Platform: Win 98 and above
Version:7 and above

You can use SnagIt to capture still images directly from a DVD player if you are using a software DVD decoder, such as Intervideo's WinDVD or CyberLink's Power DVD. However, you may need to make some configuration changes to your DVD player software in order to do take this type of capture.

Note:Windows Media Player cannot be used for this purpose because it does not use a standard DirectX layer to display DVD video.

WinDVD (Version 5)

To capture still DVD images using WinDVD and SnagIt:

  1. Set SnagIt's input to Input > Advanced > DirectX.

  2. In the WinDVD control window, click the SubPanel arrow.

  3. Click the Setup button to open the Setup options.

  4. Click on the Video tab:

  5. Uncheck all of the hardware acceleration options except for color acceleration. In WinDVD 5, deselect only the Use Hardware Decode Acceleration option.

  6. Click OK to save the settings changes.

  7. Locate the image you wish to capture from the DVD.

  8. Execute the capture by pressing the ScrLk button on your keyboard.

PowerDVD (older versions)

Depending on the version of PowerDVD you have, you may need to go through the following process to capture still DVD images using PowerDVD and SnagIt:

  1. Choose SnagIt's "A DirectX application" profile from the list of profiles. This profile automatically sets SnagIt's Input, Output, and Filters options for DirectX capture.

  2. In the PowerDVD control window, click the Configuration button to open the configuration options.

  3. Click on the Video tab:

  4. Uncheck all of the hardware acceleration options except for color acceleration. In PowerDVD 5, deselect the Enable hardware acceleration option. It should be disabled by default.

  5. Click OK to accept the setting changes.

  6. Locate the image you wish to capture in the DVD.

  7. Execute the capture by pressing the ScrLk button on your keyboard.

Power DVD (newer versions, including Version 5)

Because the hardware acceleration options are disabled by default in newer versions of PowerDVD, no configuration changes are necessary. Simply choose SnagIt's "A DirectX application" profile and then press the ScrLk button on your keyboard to take the capture.
