Smooth Scaling

ID: 7105
Product:SnagIt
Platform: Win 98 and above
Version:7 and above

If the original image you are capturing doesn't have the correct dimensions for your final purpose, SnagIt allows you to scale the image during capture, either to a certain percentage or customized to a certain width and height. However, scaling a screen image can be challenging; because screen resolutions are so small, resizing has a direct impact on image quality and text legibility. Imagine, for example, that the original picture is a tiled floor: by decreasing the size to 50%, you are effectively taking out every second tile, each of which carries a part of the image. Edges and lines will appear ragged, and text can become illegible.

To solve this problem, SnagIt offers the Smooth Scaling option. It smoothes the ragged edges and retains the legibility of text. Although Smooth Scaling does not bring back all of the lost information, it does allow you to decrease the size of the captured image while preserving the readability and maintaining the professional appearance of the screen capture.

Image Scaling, as a general feature, and the Smooth Scaling option are available together in three places:

  • Before capture: In the SnagIt Capture Settings pane under Filters > Image Scaling > Smooth Scaling
Setting up Smooth Scaling Filter before capture

  • Prior to output: In the Preview Window under Image > Scale > Smooth Scaling.
Smooth Scaling from the Preview Window

  • After capture: In the SnagIt Editor under Image > Scale > Smooth Scaling.
    Smooth Scaling in the Editor
