Text Capture Filters

SnagIt allows you to designate how the text in your text captures will be formatted, using the Layout option on the Filters menu. This is a quick way to set the exact formatting you need for your text captures.

  1. From the Mode toolbar, select the Text Capture button.

  2. Choose the Filters button, and then choose Layout.

  3. The Text Layout Options dialog box will display. Use the options in the dialog box to set your text formatting. Your choices are Space Formatted or Column Delimited.

  4. Choose OK when you are finished.

  5. You will be back at the main SnagIt view. Set your Input and Output capture options.

  6. Choose the Preview Window option from the Options toolbar.

  7. Click on the Capture button to invoke capture.

  8. Once the capture is taken, it will be displayed within the Preview Window with the customized Text Layout filter applied to it.

  9. Choose Finish to send your capture to the output source. Choose Cancel to delete the capture.

Tip: Once you have taken a capture and viewed it with the Preview Window to ensure that it is the exact filter that you desire; you can always disable the Preview Window option so you no longer have to view the capture in the Preview Window each time you take a capture.

Text Layout Options

The following table summarizes the description and use of each option in the Text Layout Options dialog box.

Option Description & Use
Space formatted Choose this option to capture text that is formatted just as it is on the screen. To eliminate extra blank lines between horizontal lines of text, check the Remove blank lines box. To remove extra space between vertical columns, check the Collapse blank columns box.
Column delimited Choose this to make the options in the Delimiter pane available. Click the radio button next to the delimiter character (Comma, Tab, Semicolon, or Other) that you wish to use between columns of captured text. When you select Other, type another delimiting character of your choice in the text box.
OK Choose OK to accept and save all changes and exit to the previous dialog box.
Cancel Choose Cancel to exit this dialog box without making any changes.
Help Choose Help to access the online help.

Apply a Set Font Filter

SnagIt allows you to designate how the font in your text captures will be formatted, using the Set Font option on the Filters menu. This is a quick way to set the exact font style and size you need for your text captures.

  1. From the Mode toolbar, select the Text Capture mode button.

  2. Choose the Filters button to see a dropdown menu of options.

  3. Choose Set Font, and the Font dialog box will display. Use the options in the dialog box to select the desired font, font style, and size.

  4. Choose OK when you are finished.

  5. You will be back at the main SnagIt view. Set your Input and Output capture options.

  6. Choose Preview Window option from the Options toolbar.

  7. Click on the Capture button to invoke capture.

  8. Once the capture is taken, it will be displayed within the Preview Window with the customized Set Font filter applied to it.

  9. Choose Finish to send your capture to the output source. Choose Cancel to delete the capture.

Tip: Once you have taken a capture and viewed it with the Preview Window to ensure that it is the exact filter that you desire; you can always disable the Preview Window option so you no longer have to view the capture in the Preview Window each time you take a capture.

Apply a Word Wrap Filter

You can tell SnagIt to automatically wrap long lines of text in your captures, using the Word Wrap option on the Filters menu.

  1. From the Mode toolbar, select the Text Capture mode button.

  2. Choose the Filters button to see a dropdown menu of options.

  3. Choose the Word Wrap option. A checkmark will appear next to Word Wrap on the Filters menu, indicating that the filter is selected.

  4. Set your Input and Output capture options.

  5. Choose the Preview Window option from the Options toolbar.

  6. Click on the Capture button to invoke capture.

  7. Once the capture is taken, it will be displayed within the Preview Window with the customized Word Wrap filter applied to it.

  8. Choose Finish to send your capture to the output source. Or, choose Cancel to delete the capture.

Tip: Once you have taken a capture and viewed it with the Preview Window to ensure that it is the exact filter that you desire; you can always disable the Preview Window option so you no longer have to view the capture in the Preview Window each time you take a capture.

Note: To disable a Word Wrap filter, click the Filters button, and then choose Word Wrap. This will remove the checkmark next to the Word Wrap option, indicating that is disabled.

Apply a Text Annotation Filter

You can use annotations to include a time/date stamp or other system-related data in the capture, and to create and customize the appearance of a text annotation, such as a title or caption. Annotations will be placed at the top of a capture. You can also customize the font, color, and placement of your annotations.

SnagIt gives you the option of creating a customized Text Annotation capture filter. This filter adds a caption or annotation, formatted to your specifications, during the capture process.

  1. From the Mode toolbar, select the Text Capture mode button.

  2. Choose the Filters button to see the dropdown menu of options.

  3. Choose Annotation, and the Text Annotation dialog box will display.

  4. Place a checkmark next to Enable Caption, then customize your Annotation and choose OK.

  5. You will be back at the main SnagIt view. Set your Input and Output capture options.

  6. Choose the Preview Window option from the Options toolbar.

  7. Click on the Capture button to invoke capture.

  8. Once the capture is taken, it will be displayed within the Preview Window with the customized Annotation filter applied to it.

  9. Choose Finish to send your capture to the output source. Or, choose Cancel to delete the capture.

Tip: Once you have taken a capture and viewed it with the Preview Window to ensure that it is the exact filter that you desire, and then you can always disable the Preview Window option so you no longer have to view the capture in the Preview Window each time you take a capture.

Tip: To disable an Annotation filter, click the Filters button, and then choose Annotation. Within the Image Annotation dialog box, remove the checkmark from the Enable Caption option.

Text Annotation Options

Note: The length of the text string in an annotation or caption is limited by width of the image or by the width of the printed page. The text is truncated if it is too long.

The following table summarizes the description and use of each option in the Text Annotation dialog box.

Option Description & Use
Enable Caption To turn captions on, put a check mark in the Enable Caption box.
Caption Use this field to add a customized caption to your capture by typing your caption in the list box or selecting one you have used before from the list box.
Prompt for Caption To type or select the caption before each capture, put a check mark in the Prompt for a Caption box.
System Caption Use the boxes in this field to include system-related data such as the Computer Name, User Name, and Time/Date.
Computer Name Select this option to include the name of the computer on your capture.
User Name Select this option to include the name of the user in your capture.
Time/Date Select this option to include a Time/Date stamp on your capture.
Time/Date Format Choose this option to select how the Time/Date data are stamped in the annotation.
OK Choose OK to accept and save all changes and exit to the previous dialog box.
Cancel Choose Cancel to exit this dialog box without making any changes.
