Núñez researches, applies and combines new technologies, devices and tools to improve or create new usability methods. He said, “For the last two years, I've conducted more than 100 user tests with over 800 users. This has been possible due to Morae.”

When Núñez began developing his usability practices, he had the opportunity to perform some user tests in a university's high-tech portable usability lab. While creating the test, he realized that the technical process was too complex, with the installation, recording, remote viewing, analyzing, making highlight videos, etc.

“When I was trying to simplify the complexity of user tests, I discovered Morae searching in Google. From that moment, Morae was the only software I needed for any user test,” he said.

Testing Life Before Morae

Before using Morae, Núñez had difficulty performing usability tests.

“It was really a complex process. First, you needed three or four hours to plug and prepare all kind of wires and devices. During the test, the technology did not allow you any kind of automatic marker. It was just a blurry user screen recording that made difficult to follow the user mouse pointer,” he said.

The analysis process was the most tedious task. “We wasted hours looking for the best video moments, counting time tasks, playing, replaying, rewinding, restarting…everything was manual, even click-counting,” he said.

He was then responsible for exporting the videos to an editing program to create highlight videos. He recounted, “The more video manipulations, the poorer image quality you got. The entire process required too much time and resources to develop them.”

“User tests were unusable!” he said.

Current Use of Usability Solution

Núñez now uses Morae to perform all types of user tests. Due to Morae's versatility, he's been able to adapt the software for each particular case, like mobile devices, accessibility tests, focus groups, card sorting, and even eyetracking.

When Núñez first attempted to use eyetracking technology, it required too much time and resources to develop correctly. But by combining Morae with eyetracking, he was able to dramatically improve the process.

“By using Morae to record the machine that handles eyetracker, the eyetracking appears overlaid into user screen recording. The combination avoids the many problems I encountered,” he said.

Núñez noted that at the London Nielson Norman Group conference, Jakob Nielsen remarked on the technical complexity and limitations of eyetracking software. He said, “If they had combined eyetracking and Morae, they would had saved a lot of time, resources and headaches. Morae helps reduce time and complexity of any user test.”

Núñez names the multiple observers, real-time markers, and the ease of creating highlight videos as a few of the main reasons he uses Morae.

“There is no other program in the market that has all these features,” he said. “Morae has simplified all the tasks required for a user test: preparation, visualization, markers, analysis, report generation…due to this simplicity Morae has made it possible for us to conduct weekly tests for 8-10 users, employing just two consultants per test.”

He continued, “There is no doubt that without Morae, we would still need much more time, and many more resources.”
