Hi UX subscribers. I'm Katie Birmingham. I recently joined TechSmith as a marketing writer and will be taking over as editor for the User Experience newsletter.
Some of you may remember in February when we asked you to help us out by completing a survey to tell us what you want to see in this newsletter. Thank you to all those who participated. As User Experience professionals, I know you understand the value of feedback.
The results were interesting. We found that about 75% of the subscribers to this newsletter are not currently using Morae or UserVue. While we welcome anyone who wants to join our list, we also want to make sure subscribers know what they are signing up for.
What does this mean to you? It means that we are going back to calling this the Morae Newsletter. Don't worry, we won't be dropping any of the UserVue content but just want to make it more clear what this newsletter is about.
I am really looking forward to getting to know the UX world better. Please, let me know if you have something you would like to share with the readers of this newsletter. I am always looking for thoughts, stories, or even something you would like to know more about. Ask me, I'll research. Chances are if you are wondering, so are others. Anything you would like to share, send it my way.

When you think of Morae, you probably think of testing things on a computer screen, like a software application or Web site. But what about testing the iPhone user's experience? Could Morae speed up and simplify a whole range of testing methods, from paper prototyping to in-depth interviews to focus groups? Could it enable unmoderated testing? The Morae development team is hard at work to support all these methods and approaches!
How you can find out more:
Come see us at the UPA and STC conferences in June.
You can also get a sneak peak of Morae 3 from Product Manager, Shane Lovellette. He's on tour offering short sessions in which he will show off the new features in Morae 3. Here's where you can catch him:
All sessions are free but have limited seating so you need to sign up. Just click on the one you want to go to for registration information. |

"This phenomenal tool has really helped us get much more out of our usability testing without spending the enormous amount of money to build a 'high-tech' testing lab. We are able to use Morae on a computer in a cubicle and get the same results as those spending thousands to build a special usability lab," David Parker said.
Mr. Parker is a systems technologist in Eastman Chemical Company's e-Business/e-Commerce team which is a part of the IT department, located at the Corporate Headquarters in Kingsport, Tennessee. He has been with Eastman for 17 years, and for the last two years, he has been acting as the testing team lead.
Read this article to find out how Mr. Parker was able to use Morae to save money and complete thorough usability testing with the lab!

Todd Follansbee, Usability Consultant |

Check out what Todd Follansbee has to say about conducting video testing for Web usability studies. With just metrics alone, you cannot tell a user's eye track or why they might be missing a key message on your page. In this article, Todd explores the reasons that video testing can be an incredibly valuable tool...even more valuable than metrics?
Todd writes, "Video testing can be complicated and involved but it need not be. We know from independent research that tests of only 6 people will reveal over 90% of a site's problems. What this doesn't say is that in addition to understanding the problems, careful testing can also reveal a range of solutions to these problems that simple or even complex traffic analysis tools or metrics testing, fail to reveal."
Read Todd's article and decide for yourself if you think video has a leg up on metrics.
