It is pretty common to use the term Web 2.0 in reference to the interactivity that is now proliferating the web. Sites like MySpace, YouTube, and LinkedIn, among thousands (if not millions) of others, would not exist without visitor contributions. Imagine LinkedIn with only 10 members... not very useful.
But how has the switch from the brochure-style web sites of what is now known as Web 1.0 to the interactivity of Web 2.0 changed usability? Are there tools in Web 2.0 that businesses can take advantage of to get better feedback from their customers?
An obvious one is blogs. Does your company have a blog? If so, is it a place to get meaningful feedback from customers?
In last month's SnagIt newsletter, we asked our readers to visit our Visual Lounge blog and tell us what's missing from SnagIt 9. We received a whopping 175 posts, some telling us about features they wish SnagIt had, others telling us what they like best about the new version.
Interestingly, there were quite a few posts asking for features that SnagIt already offers. We were able to gain some insight from this in regards to training. What are we not showing our users how to do? We were able to make a quick video showing off the "new/old" SnagIt features and send it in the next newsletter.
What about your company? How are you using Web 2.0 in usability? Let me know so I can share with the rest of the group.
As a side note, this month's newsletter is a bit of a "lite" issue. Next month, we'll be back in full force...with more on Morae 3.

TechSmith recently sponsored a roundtable discussion in the UK which focused on how to make usability "business as usual" in IT systems.
Peter Abrahams acted as chair. Other participants included developers, usability experts, an internet psychologist, and journalists, all of whom have a considerable understanding of and strong opinions about usability.
The group discussed three smaller questions that lend themselves to answering the larger question of making usability a no-brainer that is just part of the process. These are the questions that were posed to the group:
- Why is usability important?
- What are the barriers to usability design and testing?
- How should it be imbedded into all phases of development?
Read Peter Abrahams article "The Future of Usability Testing" to find out how the group answered these questions.
