If you're like most people I know, your job description does not fit into a nice little box and you do have to change, adapt and pick up new things all the time. Now, Morae can help all of you who are concerned with how people use your product...and your product does not have to be software or a website.
When you think of Morae, you probably think of testing things on a computer screen - like a software application or a website - but now, you can do more. Test your product while in the hands of the user, conduct focus groups, in-depth interviews, and unmoderated testing...just to name a few. Morae 3 makes it possible.

Let's take a closer look at some of Morae 3's new features! For more details on any or all of these, check out our What's New section.
New in Morae Recorder
 |
Preset Study Templates - Want to record a focus group? Software usability test? Mobile device test? Just select a template and go.
Unmoderated testing with AutoPilot - AutoPilot delivers instructions, tasks, and surveys automatically during the test session. Saves paper, too!
Two-camera recording - Record customer interactions that don't happen on the computer. Like focus groups, depth interviews, mobile device testing, paper prototype testing, the list goes on. |
Record two (or more) monitors - Record the action on the customer's entire Windows desktop, even if it spans multiple monitors. Or record just a region to focus on the most important details.
Multiple Surveys - Use a pre-test survey to collect demographics. And deploy post-task survey questions any time during the session. Trigger surveys automatically or manually.
New in Morae Manager
Cross-recording search - Want to see all participants' comments on task four? Or review what all your focus groups said about question six? You can now search across recordings to uncover patterns and trends in the data...right inside Morae.
PowerPoint output - Export videos (and graphs and title clips) from Morae directly onto PowerPoint slides—with just a few clicks.
Add-in for Microsoft Word - Simply drag and drop graphs, screenshots, data tables, survey questions, and more...directly into a Word document.
Variable speed playback - Variable speed playback drastically reduces your time spent logging, because you can review video in double time (or faster). And unlike "fast forward" you'll hear the audio just fine. |
 |
...And all-around enhanced usability
Work faster and more confidently with the new undo feature, more accurate auto-save, faster response times (especially when working with video), and reduced video lag when observing.
Be sure to check out this month's tutorials for more on getting started with these new features!

Casey Wright,
User Experience Researcher |

I asked Casey Wright, TechSmith User Experience Researcher, what she thinks of the new Morae. Here is what she had to say...
Q: What is your favorite feature of Morae 3?
A: I refuse to pick just one, because my favorite TWO new features of Morae make analyzing usability tests so much faster (and thus easier) than before. They would be Autopilot and Variable Speed Playback. So, on to the next question.
Q: How has Morae 3 made usability testing easier for you?
A: Currently, we tend to manage, facilitate, and analyze the data from our usability tests all on our own (too many projects, too little woman-power). This means that before Morae 3, when I was doing all of this by myself I wouldn't have anyone to log notes and data with Observer for me during the tests. So I could have to go back through all of the recordings after testing was finished by myself to mark points for the start and end of tasks to calculate time on task, score the tasks, as well as mark points for errors and video clips, etc.
I've been using Autopilot for my last few tests, where I can use the same "Think Aloud" facilitation methods I have always used and interact with the test participant, but Autopilot can administer the tasks to the participant and thus automatically log task data (this also reduced paperwork as all of the tasks are directly on the screen for the participant, and the feature is flexible enough that it actually allows the participant to refer back to the task to keep their goal in mind while not getting in the way of their work with the computer).
Then, after the testing is finished, I can go back to my Morae project and all of my tasks have already been logged for me automatically without anyone's help. After that, all I need to do is listen to some points in the recordings using Variable Speed Playback (twice the speed is my preference!) to make any adjustments to task time and mark other points of interest in the video. If I tried to quantify the time savings, I would guess that using these two features has cut my post-test analysis time more than in half.
Oh yeah, and I'm super geeked about export to PowerPoint and DV Camera input for Paper Prototype testing. I'm gushing, I know, but I really am so excited :)

Since there are some big changes with Morae 3, I thought it would be a good time to show you some overview video options. We have a slew of new tutorials for Morae 3 but I thought we should begin at the beginning. Whether you are a Morae novice or expert, these getting started tutorials will take you from conducting your first study to highlighting some of the new features with Morae 3.
