Letter from the Editors: All in the family Return to Top
Daniel Foster and Katie Birmingham

The newsletter team is taking some time off this month to relax and hang out with friends and family. So we put together this special holiday edition instead of individual newsletters—hope you enjoy the frivolity and freebies!

Ever notice how, when you're together with extended family, strangers can tell that you're all related? Maybe it's how you interact, maybe it's how you look. Or it could be those matching, red sweaters.

Well, you may have noticed during the past year that TechSmith products are getting their own change of wardrobe and some new kinds of interaction.

We're in the midst of changing the logos and colors of the products to help new customers grasp how they're all part of the TechSmith family.

SnagIt has become Snagit.

And we're building more ways to use the products together. Like sending images from Snagit to Camtasia Studio. Or sending finished videos from Camtasia Studio directly to Screencast.com. Expect more of this interaction between TechSmith products in the next few months...which springs from our desire to help you rock at what you do.

2008 also saw the launch of Camtasia Relay 1.0 (our first foray into larger-scale, server-based software) and the premiere release of Camtasia Studio in French.

We're grateful for the awesome community of TechSmith users out there (that means you!) and will keep serving you with the high levels of innovation and service that you deserve. Here's to a wonderful 2009!

Extras: Celebrate the crazy holidays with TechSmith Return to Top
Holiday Card

The theme for the TechSmith holiday card this year is crazy holidays. We added to the list of crazy holidays by creating "lowercase i day" to celebrate the new look of Snagit!

Here's the "official" press release with bonus video:

Is the capital i going the way of the dinosaurs?

Katie Birmingham | newsletter@techsmith.com | December 9, 2008

In what amounts to a slap in the face to Save the Capital I Foundation (SCIF), TechSmith Corporation has done away with SnagIt and gone with a new look, Snagit.

According to irving ingersol, executive director at SCIF, "The fight for the capital i is a noble one. Technology, society and people in marketing are constantly trying to alter the English language. Save the Capital I Foundation is not just about the capital i, it's about preserving the way we talk and how people talk back to us. Actually, it's more about writing, i guess you don't talk with capital i's."

ingersol went on to explain that, "...with all these young people using text messages all the time, it is not a shock that this is happening. i think this is a feeble attempt for companies to appeal to youngsters with this lowercase i."

To get the other side of the story, i headed out to TechSmith's corporate headquarters in Okemos, Michigan. i was not expecting the scene that ensued when i arrived. There were droves of language arts teachers protesting in the streets. Employees could barely make it though the picket lines. i was able to grab some employees once inside. When asked, "what do you think of the lowercase i?", here is what they had to say...

"i always hated the capital i anyways. it is too confusing...is that an L...SnagLt?" said Tony Dunckel, Snagit product manager.

"Well, i had to change THOUSANDS of big I's to little i's in the past few weeks...what do you think i think about it?" said Cheryl Spitale, senior web designer.

"What? Snagit is going to a lowercase i? When did that happen?" said Jennifer Dyni, manager of emerging technologies.

So there you have it, Snagit has a lowercase i. Whether you are for or against it, it is real. The international saga continues...will Save the Capital I Foundation prevail? Only time will tell...

How did this all come about? We knew it would be huge so we had the foresight to film a short documentary. Watch the video and witness the drama and laughter as Snagit lost its capital i forever and TechSmith celebrated lowercase i day!
