Use a Webcam with Jing Pro

Note: Jing Pro is no longer available for purchase. Learn more.

Jing Pro can record video from a webcam connected to your computer. Then, when you make a Jing video, you can gracefully transition between your screen content and the live webcam feed. This is great for making your screencast more personal and showing something that's not on your screen--like yourself--or maybe your new Jing tattoo!

To use your webcam with Jing:

  1. Make sure your webcam is connected, then initiate the capture and select the area of the screen you'd like to record.
  2. Click the Video button to start recording. You can switch between your webcam and screen by clicking the Turn on/off Webcam button. There may be a short delay as the webcam is initialized.
  3. turn on webcam button
  4. Click the Stop button. Preview and save or share the video as desired.

A few tips and notes:

  • For better webcam video, try to get a good amount of light on your face. Don't be "backlit" if you can help it.
  • Click the Turn on Webcam button then click the Image button to capture a single frame from the webcam video.

  • Macintosh users have the option to put their camera into "mirror mode". This mode cannot be toggled once you start recording.
  • Click the Turn on Webcam button first then click the Video button if you want to lead off with webcam video.
  • The possible delay when switching from screen to webcam will vary based on the power of your computer, amount of resources available to the computer and dimensions of the recording. Larger captures are more resource intensive. The delays will not appear in the final recording.

Troubleshooting:

  • The webcam feature is only available in Jing Pro, and Jing's video format must be set to MPEG-4. (Check in More > Preferences.)
  • Make sure your webcam is connected before starting your capture and that no other software is currently using the webcam.
  • There is no ability to select a webcam in the event your computer has multiple webcams connected. The current workaround is to disconnect or deactivate non-desired webcams.
  • While we can't test every possible webcam and driver, we've had great success with the iSight camera for Macintosh and Logitech cameras on Windows. We don't recommend using HD webcams or camcorders in conjunction with Jing Pro.
  • The Jing Pro webcam feature is not supported on Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger).
  • Your video has to be at least 160 pixels wide and 120 pixels high in order to use the webcam feature.
