Approximately 35 million PowerPoint presentations are given each day, but most people tune out of a presentation within the first ten minutes. How can you keep them focused? Images and other visuals can help. What if you were to take that one step further and turn PowerPoint slides into videos? Turning your presentations into videos helps keep your audience engaged, giving it more personality and they can learn from your content more effectively. There may be times where you need to have your presentation in video – it will be sent to supervisors, coworkers, or clients, and you won’t be able to physically present it yourself. If you are not giving the presentation in person, adding visuals and narration gives your audience the context they would have if you were right there in the room with them.

When creating a video of your PowerPoint slides, you don’t need expensive or fancy recording gear to achieve good quality. Below are three tips when making your PowerPoint into a video.

1. Have a script ready

Before you hit the record button, it’s important to have a script written so that transitioning through slides is seamless. The narration should be conversational and straightforward, therefore having a script to use as a reference will reduce any ums, ahs, or choppy dialogue.

2. Be aware of the microphone

When recording your desktop, you can use the mic that’s built into your computer, or you can get an external one. You’ll also want to record in a quiet room, turn off your phone ringer and any notification alerts on your computer.

3. Have a screen recording tool ready

In order to turn your PowerPoint slides into a video, it’s helpful to have the proper tools to do it.

Once you open Snagit, be sure to set it to video, make sure your microphone is on, and click the capture button.

A set of cross hairs will appear on the screen, allowing you to select the region you wish to record – your PowerPoint. You can select just the preview pane, or use the “present” mode in PowerPoint to expand the pane and capture your presentation in the full window.

When the area is selected, hit the record button and begin talking. When you’re finished, click the stop button and your video will save to your Snagit library. You can even trim out any awkward pauses, or other things you don’t want, if needed.

Pro tip: If you create PowerPoint presentations regularly, building a video library with your recorded presentations can be useful beyond the first time you share your video.
