Technology in Action

TechSmith products like Camtasia and Snagit are being used by educators around the world to flip classrooms and bring technology into learning. Successful educators using TechSmith technology to change the classroom include:

  • Eric Marcos, a 6th grade mathematics teacher at Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica, Calif., who empowers his students to take an active part in their own learning by creating their own math video lessons.
  • Stacey Roshan, AP calculus teacher at the Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, flipped her classroom to minimize student anxiety and maximize her time with students – which resulted in higher AP test scores for the entire class. Then she convinced her mother, an AP calculus teacher at Madeira School in McLean, Virginia, to flip her class as well.
  • Brian Bennett, freshman biology and chemistry teacher at William Henry Harrison High School in Evansville, Indiana, flipped his classroom in 2010 to give students the opportunity to become more resourceful, independent learners. By providing his students with a jumping off point, the flipped classroom model has fostered an environment where they actively explore the world around them to further their understanding of a subject.
  • Greg Green, principal of Clintondale High School in Clintondale, Michigan, who flipped his entire school! After just one year of testing this model, 9th grade failure rate decreased by 33 percent in English, 31 percent in math, 22 percent in science, and 19 percent in social studies. Standardized test scores and ACT scores have also increased.
  • Rob Zdrojewski, a technology teacher at Amherst Middle School in Amherst, NY, has been using screencasting to overcome the obstacle of keeping students on track while he’s been on jury duty. With screencasting and a webcam, Rob is able to maintain a personal element to his lessons and engage his students – even when the class has a substitute teacher.

Camtasia Studio 8

The newly-released Camtasia Studio 8 is all about making video an invaluable tool for teachers. It provides powerful, easy-to-use features like quizzing, interactive links, high-speed screen recording and the ability to view content on nearly any device. Its key features (listed below) allow video creators and audiences to engage in more meaningful ways.

  • Hotspots: Teachers can embed hyperlinks within any video, providing students with a direct call to action; this powerful, simple and highly-effective tool can be used to direct students to online research or a previously recorded lecture for additional insights.
  • Quizzing: Educators can now add multiple choice, short answer and true/false questions at any point within the video, to make sure students both watch and understand the material.
  • Reporting: Upon student completion of the video, educators receive a detailed email report from the TechSmith cloud; the quiz data can be automatically graded and organized, allowing educators to spend more time focusing on teaching and less time on grading, in-class lectures and reviews.
