03: Recording Audio

After you select the video recording area and click the Video Capture button, the recording countdown appears. By default, Snagit records microphone audio and system audio in the video. You can turn the audio recording on or off while recording a video.

Microphone Audio Recording

Snagit can record audio from your computer's microphone or a USB microphone. Microphone audio is recorded by default.

Turn Microphone On or Off During Recording

  1. If the recording toolbar is minimized, click the Snagit recording icon in the menu bar.
  2. On the recording toolbar, click the Microphone Audio button to turn microphone recording on or off.

Change the Microphone Settings

  1. In the Capture window, click the Additional Options and Help button.

  2. Click the More Preferences button.
  3. On the Capture tab, select an audio device from the Microphone dropdown.
  4. To test that the selected device is on and connected, speak as you would during recording. The Input level should move as you speak.

System Audio Recording

System audio is the sound from your computer such as mouse clicks, application alerts, audio playing from your speakers, etc.

To record system audio, you must install the latest version of the TechSmith Audio Capture Component. This component is an audio device that allows audio to pass between applications.

If you do not have the TechSmith Audio Capture Component installed, the recording toolbar will look like this:

If you do have the TechSmith Audio Capture Component installed, the recording toolbar will look like this:

Install the TechSmith Audio Capture Component

  1. In the Capture window, click the Additional Options and Help button.

  2. Click the More Preferences button.
  3. On the Capture tab, click Install Component.

  4. From here, the steps for installing the component are different depending on the version of Snagit you are running and your internet connection.
    • If you did not install Snagit from the App Store, you will be prompted to run the TechSmith Audio Capture Component installer. Click Install.
    • If you did install Snagit directly from the App Store and have an internet connection, Snagit will launch the download page in a web browser. Download the installer, then navigate to your Downloads folder and run the installer.
  5. Restart your computer.

You can also install this component directly from the recording toolbar. Click the Install System Audio button and follow steps 4-5.

Turn System Audio On or Off During a Recording

  1. If the recording toolbar is minimized, click the Snagit recording icon in the menu bar.
  2. On the recording toolbar, click the System Audio button to turn system audio recording on or off. If you have the TechSmith Audio Capture component installed, system audio is recorded by default.
