Use Snagit for Research

Snagit is a great tool for capturing online resources for your research project. Snagit allows you to capture anything on the screen including pages from online articles, entire web pages, segments of a resource, images, and videos.

You can do the following to your captured online resources:

  • Highlight key portions within a capture
  • Add notes
  • Document the bibliography information
  • Save only the relevant portions of an electronic resource
  • Archive or share your resources

Save Bibliography Information with Sources

Add the date the online information was accessed, author(s), URL, title and other bibliography information with your image captures.

Add a Caption

The Caption Effect adds text information permanently to the image capture.


  1. In OneClick, click the Classic Capture Window button.

  2. Select the All-in-One Capture Type.
  3. Select Effects > Caption.
  4. The Custom caption dialog appears. Enable the Prompt for caption option.
  5. Click the Caption settings to select the position and style of the caption. Click OK.
  6. After selecting the capture area, the Snagit Caption dialog box appears. Enter the desired bibliography information into the field and click OK.

Add a Callout in Snagit Editor

  1. In Snagit Editor, drag the top edge of the capture up to create extra space for the bibliography information.

  2. On the Tools tab, click the Callout tool.

  3. Click and drag to draw the callout onto the desired position on the canvas.
  4. Type the bibliography information into the callout.
  5. Drag a handle to resize the callout.

Highlight and Take Notes

Highlight a Section

  1. On the Tools tab, select the Highlighter tool.

  2. Select a highlighter color from the gallery or edit the color in the Properties.
  3. Click and drag across the area to highlight.


  1. On the Tools tab, select the Line tool.

  2. Select a line style from the gallery.
  3. Click and drag under the area to underline.

Add Callouts or Text in the Margins

  1. To create a margin for notes, drag the left or right edge of the capture out.
  2. On the Tools tab, click the Callout tool.
  3. Click and drag a callout style onto the desired position on the canvas.
  4. Type the notes into the callout.
  5. Drag a handle to resize the callout.

Tag Content with Keywords

Add keywords to your captures to allow you to search and find captures or organize captures by subject.

  1. Click to select the capture in the tray.
  2. On the Library tab, enter the desired keyword in the Keywords field. Place quotation marks around phrases.

  3. To view the keywords, click to open the search pane.
  4. Click the Keywords folder to view the keywords assigned.
