Uncompressed

The original screen recording with no codec applied. Like all of the example videos, it has a frame rate of 15 fps. At 128 MB for 14 seconds, it would fill a CD-ROM with just over 1 minute of video – if you don’t add any audio! And web delivery is out of the question.

Animation codec compression

Apple’s Animation codec has long been the standard for lossless QT movies. It maintains 100% of video quality, which is necessary when publishing videos containing text and crisp edges, such as software training videos. However, it can not compress the video to a size suitable for web delivery. And it will still restrict how much video you can fit on a CD or DVD.

Sorenson 3 codec compression

Another popular option, when file size is critical, has been the Sorenson 3 codec. Sorenson 3 can certainly get that video file down to a manageable size for delivery. It can do so because it is “lossy”. It throws away image information that is usually not seen by the human eye. However, when you are working with screen recordings, animation, or text, the loss of image information severely impacts the video quality. View the recording above to see the jagged edges and distorted text.
