Edit Audio & Mistakes
Learn how to use Audiate’s text-based and waveform editors to adjust or remove pauses, hesitations, and mistakes from audio or video recordings.
Camtasia Audiate automatically transcribes recorded voice-overs and imported audio files.
Clean up your narration to create smooth, professional voice clips. Use text-based editing to quickly remove words or edit mistakes, such as “ums” or “ahs”.
Suggested Audio Edits
Audiate provides suggested edits to quickly clean up your audio. Automatically silence or delete all filler words, such as “ums” or repeated words, and shorten or remove long pauses. To review and apply Suggested Edits:
- Click the Suggested Edits dropdown menu.
- Select an option from the menu. See below to learn more about each option.
Silence Filler Words
Replace hesitations and repeated words with silence. This does not change the length of your audio.
Filler Words are tagged and highlighted with a pink color in your transcription.
Note: You can adjust what type of words and phrases are tagged as filler words in the Settings menu.
Silence Pauses
Remove all sounds (breaths, room noise, etc.) from extended pauses in your narration track. This does not change the length of your audio.
Delete Filler Words
Cut all filler words, such as “ums” and repeated words, from your audio. This will shorten your overall audio track.
Filler Words are tagged and highlighted with a pink color in your transcription.
Note: You can adjust what type of words and phrases are tagged as filler words in the Settings menu.
Shorten Pauses
Replace long pauses with shorter ones. This will shorten your overall audio track.
Enter the pause duration (in seconds) and the desired shortened duration (in seconds). Audiate shortens any pauses longer than this amount to the shorter duration.
Settings
Select the type of words and phrases Audiate tags as Filler Words. You can also build a list of words to always ignore.
Edit Audio as Text
Audiate’s text-based audio editing reduces the time it takes to play back and review content.
Remove a Word
Remove incorrect or unnecessary words from the audio.
- Click to select a word in the transcription.
- Press the Delete key.
The word is removed from the audio and the transcription.
Remove a Phrase or Selection
Remove extra or unnecessary phrases from the audio.
- Click and drag to select an audio segment.
- Press the Delete key.
The selection is removed from the audio and the transcription.
Remove a Pause
Ellipses in the transcription represent pauses.
- Click to select an ellipsis in the transcription and press the Delete key.
- To silence all pauses, select Edit > Silence All Pauses.
Add a Pause
When deleting words or audio segments, consider adding a pause before or after to provide a natural pause in the audio.
To add a half second of silence before or after a selection:
- Click to select a location in the transcription.
- Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) the selection and select Insert Silence Before or Insert Silence After or press a keyboard shortcut:
- Insert Silence Before: Ctrl+comma (Windows) and Command+comma (Mac)
- Insert Silence After: Ctrl+period (Windows) and Command+period (Mac)
To customize the pause length:
- Click the Waveform Editor button or press Ctrl+1 to view the waveform.
- Click to select the word after the location where you want to add the pause.
- Drag the selected word to the right.
Silence an Audio Selection
Silence or mute a segment in the audio.
- Click to select a word or click and drag to select an audio segment.
- Click the Silence Audio button or press Ctrl+Delete (Windows) or Command+Delete (Mac).
The text selection changes to white indicating the audio has been silenced for the duration of the selection.
To undo this action, click to select the word or click and drag to select the segment, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac), and select Unsilence.
Restore Audio
Restore audio that was previously deleted.
When a selection is deleted, Audiate adds a marker to the location.
Click the marker and select Restore Audio.
Find and Replace
Quickly search for and replace words, filler words, or pauses.
- Select Edit > Find > Find and Replace or press Alt+Control+F (Windows) or Option+Command+F (Mac).
- The Find pane opens. In the dropdown, select a Find option. Select Automatically Preview to play the audio as you jump between instances.
- If you select Find and Replace, enter the words to find and replace into the fields. Click Replace to replace the current instance. Click All to replace all instances.
- Click the arrow buttons to jump between instances in the search results.
- Click Done to close the Find pane.

Edit the Audio Waveform
When you need to make precise audio edits, use the Audiate waveform editor.
To open the waveform editor:
- Click the Waveform Editor button or press Ctrl+1 to show or hide the audio waveform.
- Drag the Zoom slider to adjust the scale of the waveform display.
Complete any of the following to navigate and edit in the waveform editor:
- Click or drag in the time bar to move the playhead position.
- Click or drag in the waveform area to make a selection.
- Drag the edge of a selection to change the selection area.
- Press the Delete key remove a selection from the audio and the transcription.
Edit the Volume Keyframes
To adjust the audio levels for individual words or sections:
- Click the Waveform Editor button or press Ctrl+1 to show or hide the audio waveform.
- Click and drag on the audio waveform to make a selection.
- A green line appears in the selection. Click and drag the green line to increase or decrease the volume level.
- You can add volume keyframes to make the volume adjustments more gradual and natural, press Alt+click (Windows) or Option+click (Mac) on the green line to create a new volume keyframe.
- Click and drag the keyframes to adjust the volume levels for the section.
- To remove a keyframe, press Shift+Alt+click (Windows) or Shift+Option+click (Mac).
Note: If you position the In and Out keyframes in a vertical line, Audiate creates a linked keyframe which automatically eases in or eases out the audio. This eliminates pops in the audio when there is a silence or change in the audio level.
Tip: Export audio to TechSmith Camtasia.
To export the edited audio as a WAV file to use in Camtasia Editor or other applications, click the Export button.
Preview the Audio
During the editing process, play back the audio edits to make sure you have the desired effect and quality.
- Click and drag to make a selection in the audio transcription.
- Click the Playback Mode button to select a mode:
- Loop Selection: Continuously play the selection on a loop.
- Play Selection and Stop: Play the selection once.
- Click the Play button or press the Tab key to play the audio back from the selected location.
- Click the Pause button or press the Tab key to pause the audio playback.
